What happened (quick and dirty version)
Here is a quick and dirty version of what happened. I will post a detailed account to annoucements later. I am posting this here for rumor control.

Monday
- Called host inquiring about how to cancel servers under contract (databases were still under contract web servers were not). Was informed by faxing in a form I could cancel the contract. I was led to believe that I would be able to cancel servers separately at a later date.
- I faxed the form to get the ball rolling.

Tuesday
- Woke up to multiple text messages and email stating site was down. Logged into to hosting control panel to see both servers deleted.
- Called support to try to end cancelation, they informed me that only billing can handle that and billing is only open M-F 9-5
- Called billing and was told that the forms I sent in were for server termination and they did just that without emailing or calling me. I gave them quite a piece of my mind, but was told that they did nothing wrong. Even though their rep gave me bad info.
- Eventually got ahold of support and managed to get them to save my hard drives from the old servers.
- Had to order new database servers

Wednesday
- New database servers were finally ready
- After wrangling with support for about 4 hours I got the old drives in the new servers
- Got servers up and cleaned the databases and made backups of them immediatly
- Brought site up
- Fixed error with 1 webserver causing issues

Thank you so much for the Twitter updates! It's nice to know what's going on.

Good luck with the server/database issues.

Ooh man. Thank you for the update, and especially for acting so quickly in the face of complete BS.

Ugh, we totally ♥ you. I was in chats on AIM for most of the downtime and all my friends were perfectly happy to joke about IJ having naked nap time or passing out from too much tequila instead of bitching because we knew you'd get it back up as soon as you could. Thanks for all the updates on Twitter too, it definitely helped to actually see what was going on.

Me and mine have only just moved to IJ after the whole series of mad goings-on at LJ, and the way you handled this over the last few days has been absolutely impeccable. Thank you for the updates and bothering to let us know what was going on all the way through, even though you must be absolutely knackered. *buys virtual pint*

Adding my thanks to the others for the Twitter updates, and the wonderful fast service in getting the site back online. You're truly wonderful, and if I didn't already have a permanent account, I'd be digging into my (sadly depleted) coffers to buy one.

Like so many others have already said, thank you so much for keeping us all updated. When I get funds in, I'll definitely be putting in for a paid account.

Again, thank you.

What you do and have done for everyone here is simply amazing. The insane hard work, keeping everyone up to date of the issues, putting up with crap such as this to keep the site up and running. Thanks for being a wonderful person.

You know what? I can't even imagine the stress you were under trying to get this mess sorted. And not only were you on top of that, but you kept us up to date with how things were going in a way that was unbelievable. Every little tid bit, you passed along. Fabulous.

I thank you for it. You're amazing and yes, glad IJ is back and that you were eventually able to get things sorted.

I'm glad everything's back and up and running, but jeesh if they did something like that, maybe it's time to find new hosts! That's a big boo-boo on their part . . . Thanks for keeping us so well informed during the crisis!

And on a totally (well maybe) unrelated note, any idea where [info]dailydeviant's gone??? I had work to post there Tuesday. :^[ Now it's kaput?

Can you tell me if the current extremely slow loading of the site is due to this problem, or is it an unrelated problem?

Dude, I totally understand. I'm one of the Captains at The Quidditch Pitch, a Harry Potter archive, we had very similar problems with our first hosting company -- including the "you have to talk to billing". It was a nightmare we fixed by changing hosting companies and servers the next day. You don't have as much of an option, but thank you for acting so quickly!

I was doing this to the F5 button all last night on the twitter to find out what had happened. Thanks for keeping us all updated on what had happened. :) How long will the perm accounts be on sale for? I have no problem buying another one to help you out, when I have the money to do so. :D

Thanks for all you've done Squeaky. I almost freaked when I saw the first updates on the Twitter page. I'd completely slacked in backing up my journal - for like the past several months. My journal is my lifeline, I use it for everything, even helping me with my illness (coping, etc.). I was sooo relieved when you said you had the data back. I was seriously a wreck there for a while.

Site is still running reeeally slow, but it'll probably be better after we move right?

Please get some sleep tonight! You're doing great.

So at some point LJ became the place I use to notify people when IJ is down. :D

Thank you so much for the updates through twitter. I kept thinking of a huge LJ outage a couple years back -- it went on for nearly a week -- when I sent them an email that said:

"Hundreds of trained monkeys are hard at work" is not sufficient information during a 72 hour+ outage.

*head desk*

Sooo much! For all your hard work and for getting the site back up and running. And thanks for the Twitter as well. Great idea, kept the panic at bay!

Bought a perm account for a friend a few minutes ago, my drop in the ocean to keep things running.

I do hope you are getting some sleep now, that must have been beyond stress-full!

You are doing a great job!

Bless you, Squeaky. And thank you for keeping us informed - it is mighty refreshing to see the site go down and be able to think to myself, "Hey, Squeaky will take care of that. He's only one dude, so it might be a little while, but that's okay. He's a pretty cool dude." ♥
