LJ Advisory Board

LJ Advisory Board

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I have decided to nominate myself for the LJ Advisory board. As we do run the GPL version of the LJ Source code here, I feel that it would be in InsaneJournal's and every other "LJ Clone" out there's best interest to have our voice on the panel.

If you agree with me and want to get my name on the ballot. Go here and support me if you feel that I deserve to be on the ballot for this board.

If I actually do manage to get nominated I will post something to [info]announcements

Edit:
It appears that I already have the 100 comments necessary for nomination, but please keep commenting your support (only once per user please). That way at the very least LJ will see that it's users also want support for sites outside of LJ that use it's codebase. And that the FOSS (Free Open Source Software) movement is still alive and well!
  • I supported you, Squeaky but I still think LJ sucks and refuse to use it anymore. I signed on just for you!
    • I am only doing it to help the other LJ clone sites, I really feel we deserve and need a voice on this board.
  • You do such a great job here, I gladly added my support for your nomination.

    Good luck to you.
  • I hate LJ but I added my support to your nomination.
  • I think you'd do a great job but I hope you won't be wasting your time and energy there!
  • Today was the first time I updated my LJ in months... just to spread the word. Good luck, I support you all the way.

  • Voted!
    • By the way, still getting random 'database unavailable' errors when leaving comments.}:(
  • I voted for you.
  • i don't know much about how running source code works, so i'm confused as to why what they do has any impact on this site. do changes in LJ code actually affect insane journal? i thought code was just language, and that all the business infrastructure is separate for each blog site.
    • The the code, is actually the backend of what makes the site run. And as LJ clones, we have lost our voice into how it is developed.

It used to be a very open thing and Brad would let us commit our own code into the source to be used on LJ and all other sites, but we cannot do that any longer.
      • i guess i'm still confused as to how this works. IJ can still write (and share, if you want) your own new code, as well as use the code you cloned from LJ when it was still open, right?

changes that LJ makes to its (now closed) code are not automatically and unilaterally incorporated into insane journal as far as i can tell (ie, infrastructure is completely separate).

        is this correct at all?

        thanks for the explanation!
        • That is correct, but, they still have an open source version of the software that is updated. We just currently aren't updating from it.
  • Done and done.
  • I voted for you, too! Go [info]squeaky. You are awesome!
  • A Vote for Squeaky is a Vote for Openness!

You have my support, [info]squeaky! You have an excellent rationale for belonging to the Advisory board.

I can only hope that the LJ administrators learn to be as open with their userbase as you are with IJ users.

If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to be added to [info]premium_users since I am, in fact, a Permanent member on IJ.

  • I supported you! I hope you get it! They need some intelligence over there.

  • I thought it would be cool to use the symbol for Open Source to represent you, Squeaky. There's also the dual meaning of "openness" with the userbase that I'm hoping to convey here. But I'm sure there's plenty of creative folks here that can come up good alternatives.
    • That's awesome .. think you can scale it down to work as a userpic as well?
    • PS: I noticed you were using the poster in your nomination entry, which is cool, but if you want to just stick with the OSS + Tweak icon/image that's fine too. Either way, good luck!
  • You have my support!
  • You have my vote!
  • Squeaky, you do such a wonderful job that I will support your nomination at LJ. I do hope you won't be wasting your time.
  • I voted for you. I think it would benefit to LJ clone sites.
  • I nominated you. The count is up to 309 nominations now :)
  • You've got my vote. As a perma-account holder at LJ I really hope you get onboard with them. I'd love to see the see the same service we get here at IJ.
  • Squeaky:

Other candidates on LJ are setting up "campaign headquarter" communities on LJ. Have you set one up yet? If not, [info]aristoboule is interested in setting one up for you if you're okay with that. We think there needs to be some sort of organized effort on LJ to get the message out that you represent the choice of substance over style.
    • That would be great. With running the site, I probably need some help from a "campaign manager"
      • Okay, no problem. We know you're a busy guy!
      • I'm definitely game to help volunteer, but as I explained to [info]slyfoot, I was diagnosed with early onset Lyme disease yesterday and the antibiotics are killing me, and I'll be offline for most of the actual voting.

I really, really want you to win (PS, Istanbul is awesome!) and I want to make sure that there a number of other people who can actively campaign for you... do you have any thoughts about who you might like us to ask?
        • Thats understandable. I really just need people to do some of the leg work for me. If you're not up for it, I don't fault you at all. I don't know much about lyme desease except that it is horrible, so please please don't feel obligated or stresse
[info]xie_xie_xie might be willing toand has a very loud voice with fandom. Also [info]not_yet_defined has helped out a ton in the past. I will post about it in my personal journal and I am sure you will get plenty of people volunteering to help .. springdew over on LJ might be willing to raise her voice as well. She's good at that kind of stuff.
          • Very sorry about all of this -- I'm hoping LOTS of people will get involved since it means more advertising and spreading the word!

Awesome! I sent her an e-mail! Also, I was looking at the comments on the nomination posts, and I think you just might have the most support comments of anyone there. W00t!
            • jameth has more, but I am 2nd and I haven't even tried that hard yet :)
              • I keep wondering who he is -- I was mostly at LJ for the RP ;D.
  • Hi, Squeaky, I just had a question.

A friend of mine just let me know that when she tries to get to the site, she gets a popup ad and sees banner ads both on the side and on the top of the page. The popup is apparently a new development since last night and is from tribalfusion. I don't see popup ads nor banner ads, regardless of whether or not I'm logged into the site and I have a free account. Do you know if this is an IJ thing or an individual computer thing?
  • Squeaky--I snagged your Vote Squeaky user pic and set it as my default over at LiveJournal until the election is over, and I'm making an extra-special effort to comment and post in communities...It can't hurt, right?
