What Happened to IJ?

Okay here's my promised update of what I did to break InsaneJournal.

I've been having a consatant problem with perl (the language that most of this site is wriatten in) where certian features that should work, just don't work quite right. So I figured I woudl update perl on the server and I managed to break it, and I broke it allright .. really really badly.

It took me over 12 hours to first sort out what was wrong, figure out how to fix it, and then go about fixing it. Trust me IJ's downtime affected me personally more than anyone else out there, and I am eternally sorry for making it unavilable to all of you. This site has become a huge fixture in my life and hoepfully it will eventually get to the size where it can become my full time job ... now woudlnt that be nice.

Well as most of you have probably noticed, I have been negleting IJ for the past 6 weeks. Thats because I had a side job developing another LJ based site (dont worry its not competition, they dont even offer "journals") but now thats done and I got a good chunk of money out of it.

So I'm going to be putting the latest LJ code on the test server over the next few days. So those of you who enjoy playing with the latest and greatest features, keep an eye on codetesting for details of what will need to be tested (probably about everything).

Well Im done posting, lets get some activity in this community. I dont want it to be just about me posting whats going on with the site. Its for everyone to talk about the site.

oops, I had forgotten to add S2 privs to users with paid/perm status .. my fault, its fixed now, I also gave EI's the ability to do everything except advanced customization in S2.

On a side note, what does everyone think about the new "Rich Text Update" feature. A lot of hard work went into this both by the developers at LJ and by me trying to properly integrate it into the site.

Okay, we now have our own IP address. All users should not have seen no downtime as I had the TTL on the zone set to 1 minute and I left the old server running for 1 minute. Along with this, I have removed support for the legacy domain http://journal.insanityspeaks.com/ This URL now sends you to a page the redirects you to http://www.insanejournal.com/.

So far everything looks to have moved pretty damn smooth. I am going to wait a day, then bump the TTL on the zone back up to something sane (just incase I have to move back).

After it is fully tested, we will be able to support custom domains (such as pointing your.domain.tld to your journal). This combined with S2, which is coming along quite nicely. Which will allow you a totally customized journaling experience.
